Guangdong Province, a significant provincial administrative region in South China, boasted a permanent resident population of 127.8 million and a GDP of RMB 14.16 trillion in 2024. Geographical location and administrative division

Guangdong Province is located at the southernmost tip of Chinese Mainland, covering a land area of 179,800 square kilometers. It spans between 20°09′N and 25°31′N latitude, borders Fujian to the east, Jiangxi and Hunan to the north, Guangxi to the west, and faces the South China Sea to the south, where it shares borders with Hong Kong and Macao. The province comprises 21 prefecture-level cities and 122 counties (cities, districts), with Guangzhou serving as the provincial capital. ‌‌


Population economy and strategic positioning

Population size: By the end of 2024, the permanent resident population reached 127.8 million, making it the top province in China in terms of fertility for 17 consecutive years, and the total number of migrant population ranks first in the country. ‌‌

Economic strength: In 2024, the GDP reached 14.16 trillion yuan, accounting for about 10% of the national total. The import and export volume of foreign trade has accounted for one-fifth of the country for many years, and the regional innovation capability is leading in the country. ‌‌

Strategic position:

A pioneer of reform and opening up, and a core member of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The national manufacturing hub is home to the headquarters of Fortune Global 500 companies such as Huawei and Tencent. ‌‌

Natural features and resource endowments

Landform and Climate: The terrain is high in the north and low in the south, encompassing a variety of landforms such as mountains (33.7%), hills (24.9%), and plains (21.7%); it has a subtropical monsoon climate with an average annual temperature of 21.9℃ and an annual precipitation of 1789 mm. ‌‌

Coastal resources: The mainland coastline is 4,114 kilometers long (the longest in the country), and the sea area covers 419,300 square kilometers. It boasts international hub ports such as Guangzhou Port and Shenzhen Port. ‌‌
